Colorado pioneer, Nathan Cook Meeker was born in Ohio in 1817. He worked as a newspaperman, traveling salesman and teacher throughout the United States. Meeker was selected by Horace Greeley, editor of the New York Tribune, to found the agricultural community known as the Union Colony of Colorado at present day Greeley, Colo. Robert Emmitt was born on February 8, 1921, in Ohio. He attended Ohio State University and the University of Colorado. While at CU, he spent his summers working on ranches and exploring the West. He also spent some time living on a Ute Reservation, an experience which led to the creation of his first published book, The Last War Trail .
